Korpikuusen Kyynel - Existing Exception [demo] (01/2011)

Oh how I hate to break young metallers’ hearts. Korpikuusen Kyynel was definitely on my personal list for future diamonds that just need to mellow a while and a solid sharpening. Therefore the band’s second demo “Existing Exception” was expected with great anticipation whether or not Korpikuusen Kyynel is already on the way. Sadly, the four tracks are more of a setback.

With their quirky popishly seeming female fronted Heavy Rock they for sure have the right ingredients for a catchy demo. Their ambition is sensible in every single tune and makes it even more difficult to criticize them. Both “Prisoner of the Mind” and “Artificial Intelligence” seem to own this mentioned catchiness, but somehow they are washed out by the unsatisfying mixing in terms of voice over sound and the at times even too piercing vocals. Moreover the tracks simply feel too long, in this case “less is more” would have helped to round the overall package. The last self-titled humppa hymn is definitely only for fans of the latter. Only “You Can Fly” is balladic enough to sugar-coat “Existing Exception” at least a bit.

For the next release one can only hope that Korpikuusen Kyynel get a grip and tune their sound from being slowpoke to something more radiant. Right now it feels they took 10 steps back. Fans of Heavy Rock and female voices will probably disagree, but if Korpikuusen Kyynel want to rock the boat they definitely need to stir things up and work on the vocals!

5 / 10
